I love my small cosy flat, but in my first (month?) of becoming a crocheter, I ran into some space problems. One day I would love to have a Pinterest-type craft room wall display of all my yarn in ombre colours.
Until that day, I need to improvise, and this is how I’ve learned to store away nearly a decade’s worth of yarn purchases (I think I may have some skeins in my hair at this point).
Here are 10 ways to store your yarn when you have little to no space:
1. Chest of drawers

I have a few miscellaneous yarn skeins and yarn bags wedged between my clothes/toiletries. Not for everybody, but I’ll take whatever space I can!
2. Tote bags/laundry bags under tables

I collect cute tote bags from the pound shop every now and again which are chunky enough for storing a few yarn bags of WIPs. I also use small laundry bags that can pass for cute storage totes.
3. Wall organisers

This wall organiser used to store some hair and beauty bits before crochet took over my life so all the hair clips, tweezers, and beauty blenders had to take a hike lol.
These pockets are the perfect size for holding a couple of 50g balls, minis, or 2 100g balls if you squeeze hard enough haha.
4. Yarn trolley

My fav form of yarn organiser – my Hobbycraft crochet trolley! Right now I have my crochet/cross-stitch and craft tools, but this would be a beautiful way to display your yarn (maybe with different shades on each tier? Or according to WIP priority? 😍)
5. Upcycled furniture

This used to be our TV stand. I was close to selling it until I realised – hold up – yarn storage (heart eyes). This 3-tier stand has now been upcycled to display my fav crochet books/mags and store a multitude of yarn in the white storage bins.
Maybe there’s a cabinet, wine rack, or TV stand you could give a new lease of life to?
6. Set of hat boxes

This was a super cheap purchase from years ago, which now houses some of the yarn I think I may need in future, but don’t really want to display (the dark greys, browns, blacks, stripey yarns – sorry guys).
The biggest box can definitely store some small projects in it too.
7. In suitcases

Any room in suitcases that isn't taken up by seasonal clothes, pillows, or Xmas decorations I’m using to fill with misc yarn that I’m yet to sort through. These suitcases are under the bed, so out of sight...sort of out of mind.
8. Bookcase display

For those pretty skeins or maybe ones to keep out for your next WIP, a basket display on your bookcase can be ideal.
You could even go full geek and match your yarn to the colours of your book spines...just a thought.
9. In/on the wardrobe

A bit like ramming yarn in suitcases – this keeps the yarn out of sight, out of mind. I’ve thankfully done a clear-out recently and don’t currently have wardrobe yarn, but that will all change give a take another season.
You could also pop some crates/baskets of yarn on top if you have the room – just don’t forget they’re up there and for the love of crochet, don't leave a hook in one of the skeins, cos if you're anything like me you'll turn the whole house upside down looking for it!
10. Hidden inside hollow crochet projects!
Last but not least, you can hide small yarns inside certain yarn projects (I don't mean inside a gigantic amigurumi teddy bear or anything, that would be mad!). Exhibit A – my crocheted succulent which balances on my empty plant pot with the help of...a couple of yarn balls!
Serving the purpose of a storage place and a way to hold up the succulent top in place of the soil base I couldn’t be bothered to crochet. Lazy girl win!
How do you like to store your yarn? The weirder the better...I won’t judge 😁
